Schmap Guides Short-List, Schmort-List
December 11th, 2007 | 2 Comments
I got a message in my Flickr account from Schmap, saying that one of my photos had been “short-listed” for inclusion in their upcoming edition of their Hawaii travel guide. Sounds cool, right? Then there’s this:
While we offer no payment for publication, many photographers are pleased to submit their photos, as Schmap Guides give their work recognition and wide exposure, and are free of charge to readers. Photos are published at a maximum width of 150 pixels, are clearly attributed, and link to high-resolution originals at Flickr. [Emphasis mine.]
Uh, no. I hit the enclosed link to withdraw my photo from consideration so fast, it should have made their web site spin.
A Curmudgeonly Confession

I love fall, with its cooling weather and changing colors. I love busting out my knitted sweaters and hats, scarves, and gloves, and my giant 100% wool knitted blanket that keeps me toasty warm. When I was an undergrad, fall meant extended weekends raking leaves as a fundraiser for my favorite charity. Not so fun getting up at 7am to go rake someone else’s yard, but at the end you feel productive and happy.
I love fall, except for one thing. Halloween. I hate Halloween.
Bound to the Wheel
September 18th, 2007 | 3 Comments
Author Robert Jordan died this weekend of a rare blood disorder.
I was a huge fan of the Wheel of Time series for many years and actually credit it, and the extensive online communities that grew up around it, with helping me cling to sanity during a particularly trying period in my life. There are still traces of that period scattered about. My AIM name, for one, is still the name I bore when I roamed the web as an Aes Sedai of the Blue Ajah.
