Statement of Opposition to the War in Iraq

July 2nd, 2006 | No Comments

I oppose this war because the Bush administration’s actions leading up to the outbreak of war have been hypocritical and in direct violation of the very principles that Americans are supposed to cherish and defend. The international community recognizes this and now looks upon the United States with suspicion, distrust, and dislike. Where less than two years ago, the world almost universally gave the United States admiration, sympathy, and support, the President has squandered the international regard for our country and its people and succeeded in embarrassing us on a global stage. We are now seen by many as a loose cannon that is supported by the barest number of allies.

Does it Pay to Pray?

April 11th, 2006 | No Comments

This study was reported under headlines like, “Intercessory Prayer Has No Major Effect on Recovery” (BeliefNet) 2, “Long-Awaited Medical Study Questions the Power of Prayer” (New York Times)3, “Study Fails to Show Healing Power of Prayer” (Yahoo! News)4, and “Prayer Does Not Heal the Sick, Study Finds (Times Online)5.

These headlines may be catchy, but they do extreme violence to the actual science. This brings me to my first main point: Be skeptical. Often journalists (and sometimes scientists) exaggerate or omit certain facts in order to tell a better story.

Is that a plank in your eye?

Andrew Sullivan commented today that according to a Pew poll, Christians are more likely to support torture than agnostics or atheists.

Being that I am a smartass, my immediate reaction was, “maybe Rumsfeld should add crucifixion to the list of approved ‘interrogation’ techniques.”

I’m not one of those lefties that thinks organized religion is the root of all evil. But I do think that Marx might have had a point, because I cannot figure out what part of the New Testament can be reconciled with supporting torture.
