Trademark Shenanigans

Remember the Hampster[sic] Dance? That stupid, obnoxious, and yet weirdly addictive page featuring hundreds of animated rodent GIFs accompanied by a looping MIDI that got stuck in your head and made you want to take a drill to your temple in order to make it stop? That page that spawned such parodies as the Satanic Hamster Dance and the Hamster Blast?
Well, apparently it’s gone corporate. I’m probably way late on this, but I forgot this thing ever existed back in like, 1999, and only a weird jog of memory brought it back. I especially like how now they’ve legitimized the “hampster” spelling by associating the characters with the Hamptons.
And on top of that, there are two federally registered trademarks for “Hampster Dance”. Don’t believe me? Go to the US Patent & Trademark Office and do a search for yourself. One of the trademarks is registered for, and I quote:
IC 041. US 100 101 107. G & S: Entertainment services provided via a worldwide computer network featuring singing and dancing by animated characters; Education services provided via a worldwide computer network, namely, lessons in the fields of math, spelling, history, science, English, first aid and public safety featuring animated characters. [Emphasis mine.]
I fear for the children.
