Critical Condition

The second of my two orchids seems to be ok. None of the spotting has gotten worse in the last week. In fact, it’s doubled the size of the leaf in the last week; the leaf has grown a full inch in the last three weeks. Given that rate of growth, I’m going to assume that one is doing ok for now.

The other one is a different story. I woke up one morning this week and discovered that two of its leaves—the second lowest and the third lowest—had started yellowing.

One yellow leaf Two yellow leaves

If it was the lowest leaf, or even the lowest and second lowest, I wouldn’t worry too much, since phals should be dropping leaves from the bottom. But it’s not. I thought it might be fertilizer burn—I hadn’t leached the pot in a while—but thought I would check the roots just in case.

Good thing, because about half the roots were rotted. Here’s what’s left after I trimmed off all the bad stuff:

Remaining roots

I sprayed all the cut ends with some fungicide, and then dipped it in some rooting hormone before repotting. I’ll keep it on the dryer side for the next couple of weeks and hold off on the fertilizer for a month or so.

I hope it starts growing leaves again. It was such a beautiful plant when I got it and now it looks so sad. :(

hm… the only time when i see that kind of yellowing was when i over-watered the plants. did this for the corn plants we had in the house and they are super hardy things. i cut back to watering them once and week and now they’re all nice and green.

as for the orchids we have, i only water them once a week if even that, and they’re still alive (one flowers once a year). the trick is to fully saturate the woodchips they grow in with water.
