In two weeks I should be celebrating a very notable milestone.
I will have kept a houseplant alive for six months. And not just any house plant, mind you. An orchid. Specifically, this one:
My dear boyfriend, unaware of my bad history with plants, bought me this orchid for Valentine’s Day. I have been trying really really hard not to kill it, apparently with some success. Granted, it doesn’t look like that any more. The flowers fell off prematurely after a cold spring night during which I left all my windows open. And then I repotted it, which darn near killed the poor thing. Now it looks like this:
No no, not the pink one with the flowers. I bought that one to keep the original orchid company after it started wilting. You can see the original orchid, all droopy and limp, hiding behind the giant spray of ivy.
Yeah, I also bought some ivy to keep it company.
The orchid is doing well now, I think. The shriveled leaves aren’t going to come back, but it is putting up a new leaf now and also a new aerial root. I take that to be a good sign. And now I have a living room full of plants. They’re growing on me. [ba-dum-ching!]

what lovely orchids! we have two, one we bought and one we received as a gift. the one we bought recently finished flowering again (almost a year later) and the other one seemed to be struggling to stay alive. still, orchids are hardy given i’m a novice at keeping plants alive
