Not Dead Yet

Look! Look! I’ve had these guys for a little over two weeks and they’re not dead yet!

Orchids!

In fact, there are several more flowers now than when they originally showed up on my desk. The Rulers of Grad Studentania have decreed that grad students don’t really need natural light; my officemate and I have one of the only grad student offices with windows to the actual outside, and even then they’re tiny little windows on the floor under a giant overhang that blocks most light from above. My poor orchids were determinedly peering through one of the windows, trying to capture whatever tiny rays of light might get reflected off the ground.

I took them home after the first week and plopped them on an endtable next to my giant north window and they seem much happier there. The leaves changed from a dark green to a lighter speckly green and flowers started popping out all over the place. There are quite a few dried up buds as well, but I read somewhere that sometimes it’s just a natural consequence of being shipped a long distance. Anyways, flowers happy, I am happy.

Orchids are very hardy. We’ve had ours for almost 2 years. After the flowers drop off, you keep watering them and they will begin to flower again.
