I Would Like the Old Me Back, Please

I have been a sound sleeper my entire life. I drift off quickly and, left to my own devices, will be out for nine or ten hours. I have slept through, among other things, an earthquake and a tornado warning.

But things changed after I started grad school. Now, every so often, I get hit by bouts of insomnia. For about two weeks at a time, I’ll be unable to fall asleep or to stay asleep until the sun comes up, which makes putting in a normal workday a little bit difficult. The insomnia doesn’t seem to be triggered by anything in particular. Stress is low, caffeine intake is low, basic lifestyle remains the same.

This latest bout started after I got back from vacation about two weeks ago, so I’m hoping it will resolve itself soon. I’m so sick of waking up in response to every little thing and then feeling like living death the next morning.

Bathroom. Back to sleep.
Back pain. Back to sleep.
Nightmare. Back to sleep.
Thunderstorm. Back to sleep.
Remembered that I left all the windows open so the rain is coming in. Back to sleep.
Windows closed now, so it’s too hot. Back to sleep.
AC has made the room too cold. Back to sleep.
Weird pressure point under my shoulder. Back to sleep.
Kicked off blankets. Freezing. Back to sleep.
Garbage truck. Back to sleep.
Neighbor using a leaf blower under my bedroom window after I’ve finally, FINALLY started to sleep well. AAAAAUUUUUGHHH!

That last one really got me this morning, because a) it’s JULY, what the HELL do you need a leaf blower for, especially at 7AM??? and b) best as I figure, leaf blowers serve no purpose other than to waste gas and disturb the peace. I’ve watched university maintenance guys take ten minutes to clear a square yard of leaves with a leaf blower. You could do the same thing in 30 seconds with a good rake.

Mrphmrphm. I just want to sleeeeeeeeeeep.

The cruel, cruel irony. Normally, I am really sensitive to Benadryl and Dramamine. Stuff knocks me out for 24 hours straight (which I guess would be problem #1, as falling asleep every 20 minutes is also not conducive to work) UNLESS I take it to self-medicate insomnia. Then it does nothing. Nothing! It’s like a reverse placebo effect.
