First Blood

I had my first grade-earning opportunity of the semester this morning, a lab quiz in systems neurobiology. All reactions are subject to change upon receiving my actual grade, but right now I’m feeling satisfied with how I did.
I’m not one of those students that turns into a total stress case over coursework; I’m more of a sit down and slog through it come hell or high water type; but it’s always interesting to see how even a small quiz like this one disrupts my normal routine.
I never sleep well the night before an exam or a quiz, especially an early morning one. Not because I’m worried about the content of the exam or quiz or my ability to perform well, but because I’m worried about sleeping through it. I set two alarms last night, my usual morning hell and my cell phone alarm as a backup. A stiff breeze is often enough to make the power go out in my apartment, taking my usual alarm with it, and it’s caused me to miss a morning appointment more than once.
And then my dreams are underscored by a constant drumming of “spinocerebellar tract ipsilateral muscle stretch proprioception transverse gyri of Heschl primary auditory cortex corticospinal tract contralateral…” This is not conducive to restful sleep.
Next up: Problem set for neurophysiology. I tried doing a few practice problems this weekend after studying for the quiz, but knew my brain was fried when I kept seeing happy squiggles instead of resistors. The problem set is due on Thursday. Then I get to study for my systems neuro midterm next week. Whee!
