It’s a common theme for most of us, I think. We craft. We perceive just how huge the crafting industry is. And…nobody else gets it.

But I found an unlikely craft appreciator on our way back from our trip.

We were tired. Due to gross airline incompetence, we were over twelve hours delayed in getting home (they did put us up in a hotel overnight, but not without quite a bit of haranguing). I was half asleep aboard a Super Shuttle and the driver and another passenger were having a conversation about what it’s like to be a shuttle driver.

“You can make some good money from now until April. I make 30 or 40 grand in the spring alone, but the rest of the year, it’s slow.

“It’s not the holidays; people traveling for the holidays, that’s nothing to us. It’s the conventions, see. Houston is a big convention city and that’s when you can make a killing. We just had the quilt convention…man! I love the quilt convention!”

The other passenger expresses surprise that a quilt convention would be a big draw.

“I know! Who woulda thought it? But yeah, little old ladies and their quilts! They get out here and spend some serious money!”

My brain grumbles at the “little old ladies” remark, but I’m too tired to object.

“This year was a slow year because of the economy, but they still had 20,000 people! Last year it was closer to 50,000! Super Shuttle gives us a list of the upcoming reservations every day so we can see how many people there are. Normally it’s like, 400. During the quilt convention, it was 2,000! A day! I love the quilt convention!”

And there you have it.

A post on my Japanese yarn-shopping experience will be coming shortly.

And if he had needed another two months to finish his race.

The Bayerische socks, with their tiny, twisty cables, are done. Eunny’s design is, as usual, impeccable, with twisted ribs flowing gracefully into cables which flow gracefully into the slipped stitches of the heel. The sock is very stretchy and should comfortably accommodate a wide foot. I worked two pattern repeats for the leg to make ankle socks. Four-and-a-half pattern repeats over the length of the foot fit my size 7N feet perfectly.

I will be heading to Japan at the end of this week and plan to check out a yarn shop or two. I imagine the knitter’s-eye view of Japan to be a cross between Mochimochi Land and a candy store. If candy were made of yarn. Stay tuned for my report!

I first read about shibori felting techniques a while ago, and my initial reaction was that the result looked…diseased. Like Starr’s infamous tumor dress from Project Runway metastasizing to knitting. Though sometimes tying bottlecaps and whatnot to your perfectly good knitting would produce a more benign condition, say hives. Or pox.

I hoped that Shibori Knits would show me a softer, prettier side of shibori. And it did. Thanks to Potter Craft for sending me a review copy.

The book opens with an introduction to shibori and then jumps into three chapters with different emphases. “Surrender to Shibori” contains beginning shibori projects, most only using one yarn and exploring different resist techniques. The projects in “Shibori Creativity” use felting and non-felting yarns with a variety of stitch techniques to produce fabrics with mixed textures. “Subtle Shibori” is anything but, featuring projects with bright colors and bold styling. The use of shibori, however, is quite subtle—you won’t find any tumors here.

The patterns in the book cover a range of difficulty from simple knit/purl to lace, intarsia, and fair isle. Almost half of the projects (9 of 21) are scarves, wraps, or shawls. The remaining projects include bags, baby items, hats, and other garments and accessories (including a dog capelet). All of the projects in the book use Alchemy Yarns.

It was surprisingly hard to pick just three to showcase, especially considering that I previously associated shibori with disease. However, I settled on one project from each chapter.

Pick of the Projects:

Wood Grain Scarf (”Surrender to Shibori”; Level: Easy). Shibori can be sexy and romantic! This scarf uses Alchemy Yarns Haiku, a mohair/silk blend. The main body of the scarf is worked in a simple knit/purl stitch pattern. The lovely ripple effect is achieved by gathering the long edges of the scarf prior to felting. The end result is luscious and beautiful.

The Poet’s Shawl (”Shibori Creativity”; Level: Intermediate). In the introduction to the pattern, Gina Wilde describes the fear and surrender she experienced in working on this shawl for six weeks and the committing it to the washing machine. The finished shawl is soft and sheer. The effect is achieved by contrasting a feltable laceweight—Alchemy Yarns Haiku again—with a heavier non-felting boucle—Alchemy Yarns Pagoda.

Wild Side Skirt (”Subtle Shibori”; Level: Experienced). Lace mesh panels in a non-felting yarn (Alchemy Yarns Silken Straw) alternate with stockinette stripes in a felting yarn (Alchemy Yarns Sanctuary). The felting yarn shrinks in the wash, creating the drape-y scallop effect.

The last project with tiny cables that I did were the Denmark Socks, finished nearly a year ago. Long enough for me to forget how much my wrists hate extended cabling with skinny yarn. Or really any fancy maneuvering with skinny yarn.

I blame the Blunti Stumpos. Working cables in fingering-weight yarn with regular Addis is like folding origami with oven mitts on, but more painful. It’s frustrating, requires a lot of contorted finagling to do what I want, and it makes my carpal tunnel flare like no other.

I have thus resigned myself to withdrawing from the Ravelympics I never entered to begin with. I will finish the socks later this month, after I give my wrists a rest. So I leave you with this photo, taken right after I finished the gusset decreases and was on the homestretch to Olympic glory.

...it's one week into the competition and I'm still working the heel flap, even after shaving a few inches off the legs to make ankle socks (per my usual sock preference). It's taken me two days to work maybe six rows of the heel flap.

Two weeks ago, I was all set. I would enter the Ravelympics. I would do the Sock Put. I would knit. I would win! I would sit there and bask in the glory (and warm feet) of gold-medal-worthy socks.

But yet it seemed like a copout. A mere pair of socks in 17 days? Sock Wars veterans scoff. Clearly I needed a high start value to make an impression on the judges. Thus, I would knit a pair of socks of my own design, a design that’s been swirling in my head for a while and requires charting a non-repeating cable pattern.

And then the move happened. In my packing haste (which made me miss my college days when it took two hours to pack and clean a dorm room), I forgot to set aside the sock yarn I intended to use. Right now it’s sitting in storage with the rest of the stash, to be retrieved at some unknown date. My knitter’s graph paper is in a box, maybe in storage, maybe in one of the as-yet-unpacked boxes in the apartment.

Time for Plan B. I’d wanted to knit the Bayerische Socks for a while, and this seemed like a good time. Teeny tiny cables should be worth a high start value. I made a trip to Yarns 2 Ewe for some suitable yarn and cast on during the opening ceremonies.

Of course, I cast on during the NBC tape-delayed opening ceremonies, which meant that I missed out on 13 hours of valuable knitting time.

Which isn’t going to matter in the end, because I forgot to sign up for the Ravelympics in the first place.

Which is just as well, because it’s one week into the competition and I’m still working the heel flap, even after shaving a few inches off the legs to make ankle socks (per my usual sock preference). It’s taken me two days to work maybe six rows of the heel flap.

In retrospect, it was a bad idea to pick a project that requires so much attention, as lovely as the socks are. It’s hard to work tiny twisty cables while Jason Lezak is running down Alain Bernard, y’know?

Thank you, thank you all for giving my yarn a new home. There are still a few items left from the original posting, and I decided to add a couple more things for sale. As before, prices are in USD and include shipping to the contiguous 48 US states. Paypal is preferred, but will accept other forms of payment. Take a look!

New Items

Over half the ball is left over (4.5oz out of 8oz), so definitely enough to make another lacy scarf.

Each pair of the little balls shown here totals around 50g, so you should have enough to make a pair of children’s socks or small women’s socks/anklets out of the yarn. Here’s what we’ve got:

So…what have I been up to this last month? Not hiding from my fellow knitters, that is for sure. I did a very cool project for Lauren at LaBeana Bags, which you may see the fruits of shortly. And I am in the last stages of:

Figuring out dissertation logistics—the proposal is written, I just need to put out a fire on the experimental logistics front

Wedding planning

Moving planning

And that last item is what bwings us togevaaaaaaah today.

My knitting blog and real life just collided at the yarn shop.

I was sporting the original Quinn bag, as usual, when I heard a voice from behind me in the checkout line.

“I recognize your bag! I made one!”

She had lots of nice things to say about the pattern and the bag. I was so busy being extremely weirded out that not only are you people on the other side of the internet real*, but y’all actually knit my stuff, that I forgot to even ask her name.

So, mystery Quinn knitter if you’re reading this…hi! Please out yourself in the comments! And feel free to describe how doofy I am in real life, hehe.

—
*It’s not like I haven’t met internet people before, but for some reason it never stops being weird to me.

Pattern: Haruha Scarf
Yarn: Joseph Galler Superfine Prime Alpaca 3-ply, Black, 1 skein
Needles: Addi Turbos, US 7 (4.5mm)

The Haruha scarf had been bound off for months and just needed a good blocking before I could add it to the list of completed projects. The problem is that the only real blocking surface in my apartment is the floor. And while my apartment is carpeted, the padding underneath the carpet is virtually nonexistent and I suspect that I often wind up pushing pins directly into the wood subfloor.

Which: ouch. Blocking lace with straight lines requires an obscene number of pins. I tried, but gave up after pinning out maybe a third of the scarf because my fingers were red and sore.

So at the same time I splurged on yarn at WEBS, I also hit up KnitPicks and grabbed a set of blocking wires.

Much better. I only needed about a dozen pins to block the long edges of the scarf, and a few more to secure the ends.

Pattern commentary and lace porn after the jump.

Well, I hit the big WEBS sale and this showed up on my doorstep last week:

I have no idea what to do with transmission parts.

So it’s a good thing that there was a WEBS label on top of the box. Sure enough, it was full of yarn-y goodness.

Ladies and gentlemen, my first completed crochet project! It’s a far cry from this. And this.

*takes a bow*

Since this pattern is titled “Frogs on a Holiday,” I thought it only appropriate that I take him out on the town for a little photo shoot.

This book has a very tiny techniques section, so if you’re a beginning crocheter like me, you should have another crochet reference handy. But other than that, the pattern was very easy to follow.

More pictures and commentary after the jump.

It’s sort of been a grumpy week so far. Well, it’s sort of been a grumpy month or two, but this week has been no good. Yesterday was a good day but Monday nearly made me cry and today started out good and rapidly went downhill. I was such a frowny mess when I got home that I ate potato chips and ice cream for dinner (don’t do that, your tummy won’t like it).

I’ve been seeking out happiness where I can find it this week so, in addition to giving the froggy some arms and a new mouth, I made these:

In which case, I should totally market them to harried mothers and become filthy rich in the process.

But I’m hoping that today will be the end of the grumpiness, or at least the worst thereof. I had a breakthrough moment on my walk home today: I am grumpy because I am overwhelmed.

(Actually, there no kinds of frog legs I would eat. I’m very much an omnivore, but amphibians are on my list of Animals that are Not Food.)

You might have also noticed that I removed the mouth. I decided it looked too…lusciously porn-y.

That photo makes a good game of Spot the Clutter on my Desk. I have never in my life been able to keep a clean desk. This caused many fights with my mom when I was younger. Now I just happily pile away.

I literally have nothing on the needles right now. Ok, not quite literally, as I have about four rows of a tiny tube knit up after I got it into my head that I was going to design a sock. And then I quit. But beyond that, nothing. Not so much as a baby hat.

I have a couple of toys on hooks, one of which you saw here, but that’s it.

And it occurred to me the other day that I’m just uninspired. The projects out there are plenty inspiring. But the yarn I own…meh.

I’ve never been a big yarn stasher. Limited income (poor grad student) and limited space (poor grad student apartment) just make it impossible to really stash. If you remember, my entire stash looks like this:

And right now, those green drawers are easily half empty. The basket mostly held yarn for the Ombre Blanket and is now three-quarters empty.

This year has been an expensive year (though for good, happy reasons) and I just can’t justify buying yarn when I had, at last count, almost thirteen miles of it. Except for the ball of green Plymouth Encore being used for the amigurumi frog ($5.75), I cannot remember the last time I bought yarn. I’ve just been knitting through what I’ve got, and I’m officially sick of it all.

Thirteen miles of yarn, all earmarked for projects, and I don’t want to cast on any of it. Not the Alpaca Silk, long earmarked for the long-coveted Vintage Cardigan by Norah Gaughan. Not even the gorgeous laceweight from Sundara, because I wanted to design something special for that, and that requires time (something else I don’t have much of right now).

If I had a random stash of non-earmarked yarn, I could at least do something. Swatch exciting stitch patterns. Make a purse. Some random socks.

Instead, I’ve got thirteen miles of earmarked yarn, and not a yard I want to knit. What is up with that?

You won’t tell anyone if I go splurge on something pretty this weekend, will you?

I don’t know if you guys have noticed, but I have never knit anything with a tweed yarn. Go ahead, check out the finished projects. No tweed yarns. But then I started lusting after Eunny’s Tangled Yoke Cardigan, which is knit with a tweed yarn, and all of a sudden I wanted to learn more about tweed.

Tweed’s first two chapters are full of the history and making of tweed yarn. Did you know that:

Coco Chanel popularized the use of tweed fabrics in high fashion?

tweed yarns are more prone to felting?

The third chapter contains stitch patterns with pictures of swatches knit up in tweed yarns. This chapter was especially useful to me, as a tweed newbie and fledgling knitwear designer, to see which patterns are made more interesting with tweed yarns and which patterns are strong enough not to be obscured by the tweed flecks.

The last section is full of knitting patterns, grouped by skill level. There are 22 projects total, including hats, scarves, bags, sweaters, vests, pillows, and throws. Although all of my favorite projects below happen to be sweaters, sweaters make up less than half of the total pattern count.

Pattern previews after the jump!

Like many people, I keep an array of doohickeys and knick-knacks on top of my computer, the better to gather dust with. And I just realized that my doohickeys and knick-knacks are either: a) small plush toys, or b) random knitting that I didn’t know what to do with.

The Yoshi beanie is wearing a cape, which happens to be the first thing I ever knit that has both knit and purl stitches in it. I came home from my knitting class, thrilled that I had managed to produce a mostly-even swatch of off-the-cuff stitch patterns and couldn’t bear to just hide it away somewhere. So Yoshi got a cape.

The first baby hat I ever knit. One of my friends had a baby shortly after I learned how to knit and I was determined to make her some baby thing. But I wasn’t yet confident in my ability to make gift-able items, so I bought a ball of the cheapest yarn I could find to practice on. This was the practice hat. Of course, I discovered after I went to knit the real hat that kitchen cotton behaves really differently from wool blends.

This is a recent addition. And it’s not knitting. Did I mention that I was trying to crochet again? Ah yes, I did. It just clicked for me this time around and I’ve made quite a few random swatches and medallions just to prove to myself I know what I’m doing now. And I made a dismembered frog head. There will be a body eventually. Until then, it will continue to stare down at me creepily.

While there are some tips for assembly in my original post, here I’ve added schematics for the trickiest bits to assemble: the head and the legs.

Back of Head

In the diagram below, the light blue arrows indicate the direction of knitting.

Note that the back of the head is constructed in much the same way as the arms and the body. You make conjoined octagons and then sew the seams indicated by the black double-pointed arrows. After you are done with this bit, you will have a small bowl-shaped piece.

Front of Head

The front of the head is a little trickier. First, line up the pieces as pictured, with the right sides facing you—if you’ve done this correctly, the two bound-off stitches at the side of each piece should meet in the middle. The blue dots represent the row markers you placed while knitting.

The first thing you should do is sew the right side and the left side together where indicated by the double-pointed arrows—this is the side of each piece from the cast-on edge to the first marker. This seam runs from the center chin to the nose. Do not sew the cast-on edges together! This will be the neck opening you use to stuff the head.

Next, sew the head gusset in. Line up the tip of the triangle with the center of the V where the bound-off stitches meet. Then seam each side of the triangle to each side of the head, lining up the head gusset’s cast-on edge with the second marker. Note that the cast-on edge for the gusset is the top of the bear’s head.

You should now have another bowl-shaped piece (this one has a little point at the center) for the front of the head. Sew the back and front of the head together at the sides and at the top, leaving the neck open for stuffing.

Instructions for leg assembly after the jump.

Yarn: Dalegarn Baby Ull, #0010 and #5545, 1 skein each
Needles: Addi Turbos, US 0 (2mm) and US 1 (2.5mm)

Woohoo!! The larger pair is now done. Three mittens (smallest size) used up one full skein of each color, so I had to dip into extra skeins to finish the final mitten.

Additional Pattern Commentary
In finishing the second pair, I remembered a few more things about the pattern that I didn’t mention last time:

Errata
In the chart for the right hand palm, there is an error in row 57, the last row of the repeated section. The first stitch to the left of the border on the right side of the chart is marked as Main Color, but it should be marked Contrast Color. This should be clear when you examine the left side of the chart and the overall pattern.

Modifications
I made the cuff longer for both pairs of mittens—24 and 25 rows of corrugated rib instead of 18, respectively. I like the longer cuff because it seals against the cold better (plus I have long arms and so my wrists are forever peeking out from under my sleeves), but this isn’t so much extra length that it upsets the proportion of the mitten.

Finishing
I think it’s absolutely necessary to block the mittens the way Eunny recommends in the pattern—palm side up, with the thumbs folded in and pinned to the palm. I am generally a big believer in blocking, but there are a couple of reasons why it’s an especially good idea for the Anemoi Mittens:

The purl stitches are meant to run along the side edges of the mittens, but they are knit with the front and the back. This means that the mittens will be slightly twisted when they first come off the needles but a proper blocking will restore the intended shape.

The thumb gore is actually attached to the palm, not the side. If you look at the palm charts, you’ll see that the border continues down next to the thumb gore. Folding the thumb in when blocking preserves this border and also forms the mitten so it more closely follows the shape of your hand. After all, your thumb is usually bent in slightly, not sticking straight out to the side.

More pictures and commentary after the jump.
