Happy (Belated) Birthday to Me!
January 8th, 2007 | View Comments
When one’s actual birthday falls on a Friday, as mine just did, the only appropriate thing to do is to celebrate all weekend. I was treated to a magnificent dinner at Casablanca on Friday night and finally satisfied my nearly two-year-long hankering for escargot. I had some terrific escargot in Montreal in spring 2005 and have been trying to repeat the experience ever since. Mission accomplished.
The chicken tagine I had didn’t quite satisfy my craving for olives though, so enter Birthday Dinner #2, which I made for myself.

This would be the lamb chops (which you can barely see in the picture) and potatoes with olives, tomatoes, and feta cheese from Epicurious. Super easy, almost mindless cooking, super quick, and oh so tasty.
I cut the potatoes into smaller wedges and seared the lamb chops before roasting, otherwise followed the recipe almost exactly. I only roasted the lamb for about 14 minutes, for medium doneness.
The spring mix salad (from a bag) is dressed with a little vinaigrette I made myself—dijon mustard and white wine vinegar whisked with extra-virgin olive oil. So much better than store-bought dressing, I tell ya.
We paired the meal with a lovely chianti. I normally prefer whites to reds, but this was really good wine. There are no leftovers.
I suppose it’s fitting that I mark my birthday post with a discussion of dinner because if there’s anything I’m happy about from this past year, it’s been rediscovering how much I like to cook and improving my cooking. I’m starting to better understand how to manipulate certain ingredients to get what I want, and it’s pretty cool. Last week I made an onion-and-mushroom topping for hamburgers on instinct and it came out really tasty. Sweat, brown, deglaze, reduce. Yum.
I’m a firm believer in the power of good, home-cooked meals, prepared with love and care. So here’s to good food, good eating, and a good year 27.
