Modern Art is a Threat to National Security

I just attended the annual meeting of the Cognitive Neuroscience Society in New York. We had about five hours to kill after the conference, so a friend and I headed for the Museum of Modern Art gift shop down the street. She got a stick tea infuser; I got a set of three bottle openers with faces on them. I wound up carrying all of them in my backpack due to luggage space issues.
Let me tell you, having what amounts to four metal tubes lying side-by-side in your backpack is a really effective way to get stopped by airport security and subjected to a lengthy hand search of your stuff while you attempt to explain to the security guy that yes, you put loose tea in the little compartment and swirl it in some hot water to oh…never mind.
Moral of the story? Check your wacky souvenirs from MoMA.

Last weekend my mom and I learned the hard way that salsa is considered a liquid and/or gel. She was bringing some of my favorite cranberry salsa from the awesome cranberry store in Boulder Junction, WI but she and the salsa were escorted out of security.
