Wee Sing!

On top of spaghetti
all covered with cheese,
I lost my poor meatball
when somebody sneezed.

Growing up, we were a sing-along family. We easily owned several dozen or more kids sing-along tapes from several different series. Wee Sing. Kidsongs. Disney Sing-Along Songs. Children’s songs, campfire songs, oldies, we learned and sang them all.

It rolled off the table
and onto the floor,
and then my poor meatball
rolled out of the door.

My dad and my paternal grandmother both have wonderful singing voices and have been involved in choirs their entire lives. One of my brothers performs in musicals. And then there’s me, who inherited my mother’s singing voice. I am too ashamed to even drunkenly karaoke, but I am perfectly happy yowling away in the shower, in the car, and in front of certain people I know won’t run away screaming.

It rolled in the garden
and under a bush,
and then my poor meatball
was nothing but mush.

One of those certain people didn’t grow up in this country and thus does not have the same extensive repertoire of campfire songs that many of us do. And so tonight, I serenaded him happily from Jumpin’ Jim’s Camp Ukulele: 40 Easy Songs for the Whole Family!.

The mush was as tasty,
as tasty could be,
and early next summer
it grew into a tree.

I have not sung, or even thought about, most of these songs since I was a pre-teen. He’s never heard many of them, ever. And so we, two adults approaching these songs with fresh eyes, found ourselves doubled over with laughter at “On Top of Spaghetti.” This song is hilarious!

The tree was all covered
with beautiful moss;
it grew lovely meatballs
and tomato sauce.

A sneeze! Apparently producing wind speeds equivalent to a Category A Tropical Storm! Sends a meatball flying! Into a magic bush! And then it grows into a spaghetti tree! I mean…WHAT? I seriously hope this song didn’t make sense to me as a kid, because that would suggest I was doing hard drugs as a toddler.

So if you eat spaghetti
all covered with cheese,
hold onto your meatballs
and don’t ever sneeze. Aaaah-choo!

As soon as I finished reading this I sneezed twice. Weird.

My almost three year old nephew LOVES Kidsongs, and has since he was just a few months old!

I grew up on these too … Some of my earliest memories include singing classics like “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly” with my grandparents. How fun that you had the opportunity to introduce your friend to this exciting repertoire! :-)
