Pointless

I read the news these days and I despair.

All the violence and the greed and the corruption. Why? For what purpose?

All the blood spilled and the limbs lost. What good does it serve? Or perhaps the question is, whose good does it serve? Because surely, for those of us who are fully capable of loving neighbors different from us, it is not our good that is being served.

As the bombs fly through the air, they do much more than break open buildings and bodies. They break down the social and psychological structures that keep man from descending into primitive mental states with hi-tech weapons. Cities burn and ignite citizens’ barely-contained hatred.

And as I sit, the despair is overtaken by exasperation. On some level, this all seems profoundly stupid, like something that might have been avoided had we dragged all these leading characters together twenty, thirty years ago and packed them off on a ropes course with a few beers and a few good therapists.

Sometimes it amazes me that, in this day and age, we can mess with DNA, send probes into farflung space, and harness the power of nuclear energy, and yet we have such limited tools when it comes to stopping grown men from behaving like assholes. Without killing them.
