Like the Devil Himself is After Me

Well, I Ran Like Hell on Saturday, like I said I would. I was thinking it might have been more of a Rain Like Hell, given the state of the weather lately, but someone above was smiling upon us and stopped the rain just before the start of the race.

Since it’s a Halloween race, people are encouraged to dress up. My favorite costumes were the four girls dressed as two jailbirds and two cops. The Bomb Inspector, with the shirt that said “If you see me running, try to keep up!” also got a laugh.

The race started, and I ran. I had an inkling that I was probably running a little faster than my usual pace, given that I was breathing a little harder than usual. After I’d gotten passed by over half the crowd and after I’d run just a little over a mile, the race organizers started yelling for us to keep to the right, since the lead runners were already on the way back.

This was about ten minutes into a 5K race. A woman behind me yelled “I used to find you inspirational, but right now I just hate you!” at the lead runners as they passed. It was kind of amusing.

The official unofficial times (unofficial because there was no computer chip timing, thus you need to subtract however long it took people to actually cross the starting line from wherever they were standing in the pack) are posted online now. You can see me near the top of the 10:00-minute mile crowd with my overall time of 31:09.

31:09!!

While it’s kind of slow in the grand scheme of things - check out where I am in my age group standings (W 20-24) - it’s about five minutes faster than I was expecting to run.

So I’m pretty happy with the result. :)
