Still Alive

The U.S. in the World Cup, that is, after barely hanging onto a 1-1 draw with Italy, in one of the ugliest soccer matches I have ever seen in my life. Every U.S. soccer fan should send Ghana some flowers for helping us out by thoroughly manhandling a lackluster Czech Republic. Well played, Ghana!
I really love soccer (played it for nearly a decade as a kid) and lament my lack of cable or satellite TV for this year’s World Cup. Partly because my ABC reception is a bit spotty, partly because it limits the number of games I can watch, and partly because it forces me to watch matches with horrible commentary.
If I could watch some other country’s coverage of the World Cup, I could save myself the trouble of having to go kick Dave O’Brien in the teeth so he’ll stop flaunting his soccer ignorance to the world.
Things that are awesome about soccer:
Not a sport for wusses. Full contact, no pads. When we say a half is 45 minutes, that means you are running, nonstop, for 45 minutes. No monkeying around with fouls or timeouts or 2-minute warnings to give you a chance to breathe and regroup. No getting to rest while the offense plays or vice versa.
It’s a sport that requires strength, speed, agility, and finesse to play, along with a lot of concentration. If your mind checks out at the end of a game, you wind up doing things like giving up three goals in the last ten minutes in a massive flameout.
It’s a true team sport. It doesn’t matter how hot your hotshot is. He or she cannot beat 11 defenders alone. You must earn your goals as a team. No weak links are allowed; opponents will root them out and punish you for having them.
