Is Our Grad Students Learning?

I had to write up a short project proposal this week. I’d submitted to the same people before, so I went back through my old files and dug up the proposal from a year and a half ago, co-written with a fellow student.
I about fell out of my chair.
It was so bad.

So I’m trying to register for a conference and this is what it says on the registration page:
There is no registration fee for this year’s conference. Instead, a payment of $200 is required at the time of registration to defray the cost of meals and refreshments for conference attendees.
So there’s no registration fee, you just have to pay a fee at registration. Gotcha.
Memories of Recruitment Weekend

It’s that time of year, when stomachs are aflutter and thoughts of long-term partnerships are in the air…
That’s right, it’s grad school recruiting season! Our recruitment weekend is near and I am playing my customary role as student host/recruit herder.
I remember my own visit to Pitt/CMU well. The weather was nice, unlike what the recruits this year will be experiencing, on the heels of a trademark Pittsburgh winter storm: half snow-turned-slush, half freezing rain. The interviews themselves went fine. I felt terrible for most of the rest of the time. I had such a rough time of it (much of it my own doing), that sometimes I think it’s a marvel I ever decided to come here.
